Strategy Game of 2013

The award for Best Strategy Game of 2013 goes to:

Don’t Starve

It looks cartoony, but Don't Starve requires high levels of concentration and planning, as well as the ability to endure long periods of being freaked the fuck out.

I might cop a bit of shit for this. Before you get all up in arms about Don’t Starve not being a strategy game, let me say… you’re partly right. While it’s not a real-time strategy, turn-based strategy, or DOTA, that doesn’t stop it from overflowing with elements of strategy in order to survive through the winter on its harsh, unforgiving world. Every minute decision can have a lasting impact on your game and you’ll be forced to think deep strategy right from the get-go to your inevitable fall.

Yes, I’ve played Europa Universalis IV, and yes I enjoyed it, and yes it is strategy in its purest sense, but Don’t Starve is a unique, genuinely terrifying, highly enjoyable attempt to merge strategy with survival horror, and it’s fantastic. (Also we decided to not give it to an expansion, so XCOM: Enemy Within and Civilization V: Brave New World both get honourable mentions.)
